Palm’s Treo Pro in the wild, probably not fake

In case there was any lingering doubt that the Treo Pro (alias Treo 850) was real — and there probably shouldn’t be, considering it got snapped all the way back in May — this round of non-blurry (dare we say artistic?) shots should pretty much seal the deal. The glossy shell, promise of a 320 x 320 display, and a general acknowledgment of circa-2008 industrial design definitely have us feeling just a little less pessimistic about Palm’s prospects right now; if anything, it makes us wish they had some Android kit up their sleeves rather than slaving away on the thus-far vaporware Palm OS 2. As WinMo goodies go, though, this thing looks like it’s ready to hang with the best of the best — so bring it on, Palm. A legion of fans with well-worn 750s awaits you. In the meanwhile, check another shot after the break.

Sony Ericsson’s canceled W595s for Orange gets postmortem look

There are canceled Sony Ericsson models worth mourning, and then there are others that simply aren’t. We’d argue that the W595s falls into the latter category, a one-off version of the W595 that was crafted to Orange’s exacting specifications but — for reasons clear only to Orange and Sony Ericsson — was apparently canceled just hours before its announcement. One of the W595’s strong suits is its simple, monochrome appearance, and that’s an advantage lost on the W595s thanks to a chrome bar that needlessly bisects the bottom quarter of the face. So yeah, to the execs that dropped the axe: good call.

Push notification services now in hands of select few iPhone devs

Posted by yusda 1 August, 2008 (0) Comment

You have to be one of the cool kids to get it, but Apple has apparently pushed out another beta of iPhone firmware 2.1 (along with the SDK) to a few devs that for the first time contains a “rough” implementation of Cupertino’s arguably overengineered solution for dancing around the contentious background app issue. The Push Notification Service routes real-time notifications through an Apple server, which in turn tosses those notifications onto iPhones around the globe — a service Apple intends to make available to a general audience in September. There’s apparently no actual hardware running on Apple’s end yet, though, so the chosen few included in the early seed will just have to close their eyes and make believe as they enjoy the fruits of a new ROM a few days before their equally qualified, equally worthy counterparts.

MacBook rumors swirling: glass trackpads, custom chipsets, ponies, ice cream

Posted by yusda 29 July, 2008 (0) Comment

An interesting wave of MacBook rumors hit today, for some reason, following up on these weird case images we saw a while back. First up, Seth Weintraub at Computerworld says the new machines will be manufactured in an all-new process out of one sheet of aluminum and feature glass multi-touch trackpads — which seems entirely unnecessary, since there’s no reason for the trackpads to be clear if there’s no screen underneath them. (No, there’s not going to be a screen underneath them. Stop it.) Second, AppleInsider says that the inherent suck of Intel’s integrated graphics solutions is pushing Apple away from using the Centrino 2 / Montevina platform in the MacBook, and that the company’s planning on doing its own custom chipset instead. That’d a be big step for Apple, since it’s basically used Intel reference designs ever since it went x86 — but given how useless Intel’s integrated graphics are when really pushed, we can see why Apple’s ready to walk away. Of course, this is all nothing more than rumor and speculation, so we wouldn’t expect any of this to actually come to pass, but hey, it’s fun to dream, right?

Sandberg intros wireless keyboard / touchpad combo for HTPCs

Posted by yusda 26 July, 2008 (0) Comment

Wireless keyboards with built-in pointing devices are usually pretty ugly, and Sandberg’s new HTPC-oriented keyboard is no exception: sure, the dedicated Media Center Keys and 32-foot range are nice, but that two-tone color scheme is straight out of 1987. Plus, check the placement of the Media Center button — yeah, that’ll never get accidentally pressed. On the plus side, it’s just £49 ($97), so you’ll have plenty of scratch left over for fiber-optic lights and white shag rugs.
